重戒律开办学院

辛未九十二岁。公为宗门泰斗。提倡向上一法。教外别传。直指人心。见性成佛。不立文字。以心印心之法。复以末法僧伽。不重戒律故。创办戒律学院。作育佛教新青年。绍隆正法。请慈舟律师。为主讲法师。学僧六七十人众。

宣化偈曰：

提倡木乂造僧材。十方学者归去来。
主讲律师委慈老。大阐尸罗金刚戒。　

Establishing an academy for intensive Vinaya

The Master was ninety-two in 1931, and was esteemed as the leader of the Ch'an school of Buddhism. He taught that the method of attaining the One lay in the "special transmission outside the teaching; direct pointing to the heart; seeing the nature and becoming a Buddha; a method which is not dependent on language, but which is the mind-to-mind transmission." Moreover, because the Sangha in these Dharma-ending times did not lay emphasis on the moral code, the Master organized a Vinaya Academy to educate young Buddhists in accord with the Proper Dharma. Vinaya Master Tz'u Chou (Compassionate Boat) was invited to he the senior lecturer. Some sixty to seventy monks enrolled.

The gatha says:
He promoted the Pratimoksha and developed Sangha talent,
And students from the ten directions returning home, arrived.
The Venerable Tz'u was chosen as chief-lecturing Vinaya Master.
He clearly explained the Shila Code, that is, the Vajra Precepts.
