冤魂索命报仇

癸丑七十四岁。为会务入京。见熊希龄内阁总理任可澄。甚维护佛教。甲寅七十五岁。回鸡山理工程。游藏十三大寺。乙卯七十六岁春。戒期毕。有邓川县。丁孝兼。女年十八。一日忽不省人事。及醒。变男声。大骂其父曰。汝恃势诬我为匪。至丧我命。我即董占彪。汝还记得否。今阎王准报八年之仇。语毕。持刀逐丁。

宣化偈曰：

因果不可逃。造业必受报。
今日鬼索命。往时心丧招。　

An avenging spirit demands a life in repayment

The Master was seventy-four in 1913, and had gone to the capital on important Buddhist Association affairs. He spoke with Prime Minister Hsiung Hsi Ling and Minister of the Interior Jen K'e Ch'eng, whose efforts helped to protect Buddhism. In 1914, the Master, then seventy-five, returned to Chicken Foot Mountain, where he oversaw the repair of monasteries and temples. Traveling through Tibet. he visited thirteen great monasteries. The Master was seventy-six in 1915. After the transmission of the precepts in the spring, the eighteen-year-old daughter of an imperial scholar named Ting, a native of Teng Ch'uan county, suddenly lapsed into a coma. Upon waking, she spoke with a male-sounding voice, and angrily accused her father, saying, "You presumed upon your position to falsely accuse me of being a thief and are therefore responsible for my death. I am Tung Chan Piao; do you remember? King Yama has allowed me to avenge this eight-year grudge!" With that, she grabbed a knife and chased after Ting.

The gatha says:
Cause and effect cannot be escaped.
Making karma, you must receive the retribution.
If today a ghost demands your life,
It is because of your murderous mind in the past.
